The FIRE DETECTION System

Soufli Municipality

System description

The Fire Detection system in the Dadia - Lefkimi - Soufli National Park consists of

  • Two fire detection stations located on the two highest peaks of the National Park. Each station includes a thermal and an optical camera, a meteorological station, a signal transmitting antenna to the control center, cameras and security systems and photovoltaic panels and batteries for its power supply. The complex is installed on a single metal pole 4-6 meters high (+ 1 meter lightning rod).
  • Signal transponder installed on a suitable hill near the town of Soufli. The transponder includes a weather station, a receiving and transmitting antenna to and from the control center. The complex is installed on a single metal pole 8 meters high (+ 1 meter lightning rod).
  • Control Center which has been installed in the City Hall of Soufli and includes a signal antenna, monitors and computers for the operation of the cameras and the display of information.

The operation of the system

The thermal-optical camera pair of each fire detection station rotates continuously and detects heat sources within a radius of 10-12 kilometers and transmits in real time the visual and thermal image of the area which it is investigating each time. If one of the stations detects a temperature higher than that predetermined by the system operator immediately, the corresponding thermal and optical camera pair focuses on the point and signals an alarm at the Control Center. The control center, in addition to the constant audio message it transmits to the City Hall, sends SMS and e-mail to predetermined officials for the Civil Protection of the area. It then has the ability to provide an image of the fire to authorized users to put it out. The system also provides real-time meteorological data and statistics. In case of alarm, it records the event on video.

The Control Center provides information (alarm, meteorological data and image) at terminals (stations remote from the control center), via internet installed at the Soufli Fire Department, the Soufli Forest Service and the Management Body of the Dadia - Lefkimi - Soufli National Park.
